The 300 win will use 77 gr of H-1000 to get the 3K with a 215. The Edge will use 92 gr to get the 300 to 2800 fps.

They both will serve you very well out to 1000 even hunting elk. But the 338 will always arrive with more energy and will shine at the longer pokes past 1200.

It is simply a matter of which you prefer to do the job. For the most part the 300 win will be hard to beat. But if you want a 338 I totally understand your thinking. I shoot both regularly.

Jeff
If the 300win gets that speed what can I expect from my 300wby with a 25" 1 in 10?

I have both, the 338 Edge see's more shooting time than the 300. It also has more punch at the longer range targets. Both are a dream to shoot.

What barrel length would you go with on the Edge. Thanks for everybody's replies. I think I am going to try the Edge. I have never owned a 338 caliber so it might just be fun to play around with.

All you want to carry. 28" plus brake as a minimum. Most we build are 28's and 30's

Elkkillinfull, if you havent already decided on a brake, may i recommend the assassin muzzle brake from jecustom.com? IMO his brakes are the best on the market as far as recoil reduction. I am also considering rebarreling a gun to a 338 Lapua and will be using this brake, it should bring recoil down to the 15-18 ft lbs range with a 300 grain bullet, that is just below the level of a 7mm rem mag. And if you are looking for a barrel, bugholes.com has some bartleins in stock at the moment.

Biggest fail of 2014 so far... http://www.longrangehunting.com/foru...ea-ftf-128972/

My guess on W3P .308 230 Grain Bullet: G1 .740-.755

The thread you refer to was the season I was awaiting my new 338. I hunted with the 300 win all season because it was the largest long range rid I had. But as you can see it does a very good job.

There is no bad choice between the 300 win and the 338 EDGE.

Jeff
I am also now facing the same issue with my rifle. I plan to re-barrel my shot out 338 RUM to either another 338 RUM, 338 Edge or 300 WM, shooting a 215 or 230 Berger. I was thinking about the 300 WM, because of the thread Broz posted where he killed everything with it, it was impressive! It there really a big difference between the 338 RUM and Edge? Which is generally more accurate? My current rifle sports a #8 Krieger barrel, but I want to go a bit lighter this next time. The rifle would be used mostly for elk.

With the new Bertram Brass from Defensive Edge I would go Edge over RUM. But I would anyway, why not take the added boost in performance unless you want to shoot factory ammo. The Edge is good brass will match the performance of the standard 338 Lapua hand in hand. A 28 or 30" Sendero contour Fluted is a hard one to best for a carry rifle that will shoot well to the limits of the chamberings capabilities.
