Which caliber 300 win mag or 338 edge

Ok so I am going to be sending off a Sendero I have to have it rebarreled but can not decide what caliber to have it done in. I have always loved the 300 win mag but have been very interested in the 338 Edge. The rifle will be used for hunting and for targets out to at least 1200 yards. For bullets in the 300 I would shoot either the 210 or the 215 berger and for the Edge I would shoot the 300 gr berger.

.300 Ackley Magnum 40-degree Shoulder... It's quite nasty. I'm fixing to buid one, and my smith has a couple of them.

You can form brass from .300 H&H, .300 Wby, 7mm STW, or 8mm RemMag, so brass will always be pretty readily available.

Haha I knew soon as I saw your post it was going to be about that .300 Ackley! It is a very interesting and wicked cartridge.

The 300 win with a 28" tube will yield 3000 fps with a 215 Berger. This velocity range works very well with this bullet. If you consider a chambering with any additional capacity over the 300 win I would opt for the 230 Berger.

The 300 win will use 77 gr of H-1000 to get the 3K with a 215. The Edge will use 92 gr to get the 300 to 2800 fps.

They both will serve you very well out to 1000 even hunting elk. But the 338 will always arrive with more energy and will shine at the longer pokes past 1200.

It is simply a matter of which you prefer to do the job. For the most part the 300 win will be hard to beat. But if you want a 338 I totally understand your thinking. I shoot both regularly.

Well, I've probably got over 500 STW brass, most of which I don't make much use out of, because I don't shoot the ole' girl much anymore. I don't want to burn out the barrel, and it shoots entirely too good to pull it apart and stick another barrel on it just to shoot it more. Especially since I have a bunch of other options to take to the range that have decent barrel life. But all that STW brass is more than I'll ever shoot of the STW, before my barrels get trashed, so I might as well re-purpose some of it. Plus I have a spare brand new take-off .300 Wby Sendero SF barrel sitting in the barrel rack just begging to be reamed to .300 Ackley. Now to find a spare magnum action...

Well I was all about the Edge up until about 2 months ago. Then I read Broz's comparison of the 210 vs 215 berger and it got me thinking why not go with the 300 win. Now on Saturday the gunsmith will be taking my rifle with him so its decision time.

The 338 kills better, no doubt there. If you hunt primarily elk, go 338.

The thread you refer to was the season I was awaiting my new 338. I hunted with the 300 win all season because it was the largest long range rid I had. But as you can see it does a very good job.

There is no bad choice between the 300 win and the 338 EDGE.
