Brux #3 or #4 Contour for Rem 700 Classic ?

Hey all,

First time poster, but long time peruser.

I have a Remington 700 Classic in a 25-06, and for grins, I'm going to re-barrel it in either a 240 Wby or 6MM-06. Not sure which one yet. Anyway, I want to install a barrel that will parallel the dimensions of the original Remington factory barrel as much as possible. The reason is, I would like to keep from modifying the barrel channel of the factory wood stock, in case I want to put it back to original.

I called Norm at Brux and he wasn't quite sure which Contour would fit best, so thought I would defer to you guy's, hoping someone may have an answer.

Thank you.

What are the finished muzzle dimaters at 26" for each size?

Why don't you put a caliper on the end of your factory barrel and measure it and see what it comes out to? I think most factory Rem sporter #3 barrels are around .660" @ 24"....And a Heavy Sporter #4 is around .660" @ 26", and the Varmint contours are .830" @ 26", like in the Sendero and 5R models.

Hope this helps.

.800 for the #3

.830 for the #4

The barrel on their contour chart shows 27 in total, but the measurement for the #3 was taken at the 24 in point and the #4 was taken at the 26 in point.

Hope this helps.

If you don't want to do anything to the stock, a #4 will not work for you. A number three might work but you could need a #2. You are going to have to pay close attention to where you cut the breech end. I'm basing this on my experience with Krieger barrels. Brux uses the same contour chart but how they are polished can make some difference in the size on a sporter contour.

Measure your barrel at 1 inch increments from the breech to the muzzle and I can make a better guess at what will work. Brux should be able to tell you which one without guessing.

Or better yet, send your barrel to Brux and have it duplicated.

+1 Most custom barrel makers will copy a factory contour. Don't know about Brux, in particular, but, Hart doesn't charge any extra. The 'installer' just has to be careful and know how to 'shank' the new blank properly. But,, you're making it hard on yourself. You won't want to "put it back to original" after shooting a custom. If you don't want to do any wood work, pay someone who knows how! "Custom" isn't "drop-in". And, your choice of calibers leaves alot to be desired. 6mm pretty much limits out in the 6mm Ackley case. After that, you're pushing "the law off diminishing returns"and just cookin' barrel steel.

The .800 and .830 you listed are not the muzzle diameters...
