Back From Black Nitride

Just recieved my rifle parts back from Black Nitride treatment yesterday. From the day I shipped them out UPS ground to when I got them back was 17 days. Great turn around! Price was $200 for batch, plus $30 shipping to plus $50 Insurance plus $30 shipping back... I took the chance they wouldn't be lost coming back.

I am super happy with the results so far. They look and feel great!

Components treated were...

(1) 300 Ultra Match Barrel w/Muzzle Brake
(1) 6.5mm WSM Barrel w/Muzzle Brake
(1) 6mm x 284 Barrel w/Muzzle Brake

(1) Smith & Wesson Reciever

(1) Weatherby Vanguard Reciever

(1) Remington 700 Reciever

(1) CM Bolt Body #195
(1) CM Bolt Body #532
(1) SS Bolt Body (no number)

(2) CM Bolt Shrouds
(1) SS Lug

Here are the pics. I would describe the finish as a satin/matte black. Lighting isn't great but you get the idea.

Nice. I would like to know what you think after you have used them.

Rock on Mark.

Are you going to cera-kote over the black or leave them as is?

I've read that some pretty intense cleaning is necessary after this process is done; what does the bore look like?

Re: Back From Black Nitride

Thanks Guys!

Steve, I plan to do a couple of threads to review my experiences. I plan on leaning on the 6-284 pretty hard to check barrel life. Will be reporting on fouling and cleaning as well.

Tyler, The bore looks good as far as my poor eyesight can tell but i will definitely be scrubbing them. My smith will give them a look over with the borescope so I should get a pretty good idea of what condition they are in. I like the black color so no plans for Cerakote at the present time.

Paul,

I went with H&M. Very easy to deal with and can ship and receive directly. Their process is also a lower temp than melonite (1000* vs 1100*) and from what I've been told, the finish is more consistent, and from what I see, it's perfectly consistant although it might be hard to tell by the pics because of lighting. Also, the lower temps allow them to do cast actions which the S&W and Vanguard are.

That's a bargain, and great turnaround time also. Wonder if you got lucky on turnaround or if that's fairly standard for H&M?

The price has gone up to $250 per batch, whether you have one barrel or three rifles. They told me they could take up to 3 rifles in a batch. Still a darn good price for 3 rifles.

They quoted me about a week for turn around once it arrives. They actually got it done in about 3 days.
