Anyone have a 30-06 with a 30in tube

Just curious if anyone has a 30-06 with a 30 in tube. If so can u tell me what velocities you are getting with what bullet weights, what powder ect.

You can get a little over 3000 fps with 168s and H4350. I find H4350 to be the best powder for a 30-06 and with its burn rate and the amount used you will only pick up about 150fps over a 24" barrel. I load for a friend that has an encore pro hunter in 30-06 that has a 28" barrel and he get 2990 with a 168 nbt and 59grns H4350.

I use 57.5grs of RL-17 with 168's, getting an avg 2965 fps out of a 22" barrel. I used 59grs of H4350 with 168's same barrel get 2910 fps. These are max loads. S with a 30" barrel I bet you would see better fps from 125-175 fps.

I wonder if the heavier bullets with slower powders (e.g. the new Berger 230gr OTM) would benefit more?

Perhaps someone with first hand experience or Quick Load could provide some data?

Here are some Quickload simulations. I let Quickload pick the powders and loads (typically about 90% SAAMI max.

bullet ................... ........ 24" ....30"
155 grain Berger VLD 2936 3082 56 grains Reloader 17. Used 3.34" cartridge oal.
210 grain Berger VLD 2576 2709 58 grains IMR 7i828 SSC . Used 3.5" cartridge oal.

This is only to show the effect of an extra 6" barrel length for a 30-06. Only the barrel length was changed going from 24 to 30 inch. Bottom line is that the extra 6" adds about 5% more velocity which is about 10% more energy. It helps heavy bullets slightly more than lighter bullets.

That actually looks pretty interesting. It would be fun to play with the new 230g Berger and a long progresive twist barrel.

But, at the end of the day.... and good as the '06 is... there are bigger 30cal cartridges available.
