Which 6mm for a Remington 700 LA

I have a Remington 700 Long Action and an 8 twist, 6mm, 26" krieger barrel. I'm wondering what cartridge people would recommend. I was thinking 6-06 or 6mmAI. This will be used mainly for deer and some coyote hunting. I would like to shoot 90-95 grain bullets. Thanks for any suggestions and info. BTW, I already have a 243 winnie.

Depends on how fast you want to put another barrel on it, I like the 6mm06 AI, or you could do a 240 Gibbs (I have one, love it). The shoulder is moved forward quite a bit compared to 6mm06 AI, more powder, more speed, shorter barrel life, or you could do 6mm X 284. Then there is the 240 Incinerator, a 6mm X 264 Win Mag IMP, 70gr @ 4400fps, REAL short barrel life.
The possibilities are endless.

I really like the 6-284.
I have one with a28"barrel and it is awesome.

With a 26"barrel a 6mm AI may give equal performance.

With that twist I would think about a 6-06 AI. Might not see much gain in FPS with a 95gr but as you climb up it would start to show. Should be close to 3500-3600 fps. You would want at least a 26" tube. I am having a 6-06 built as we speak with 1:10. Plan on shooting 70-80's for yote's and the 95 VLD's for deer. There are a few post on here about this cal. Brass is easy to get a hold of and cheap.

Thanks for the suggestions and info. I have decided to go with a 243 Catbird after speaking with my gunsmith.

Re: Which 6mm for a Remington 700 LA

I am doing bullet tests today on several big 6mm's. I would do either the 6mm-06 AI or the 240 Gibbs. The Gibbs is the fastest 6mm out there with any kind of barrel life. Mine shoots the 70 grain varmint bullets over 4000 fps. 55's at 4300 fps. The '06 AI is 100-150 fps less. Both are very good and fast 6mm's. The short neck on the Gibbs is not that much of a factor in 240. It has a .25" neck with .243 caliber bullet so it retains good accuracy. I have a long range rifle on the 240 Gibbs shooting 107 SMK's with very good 1000 yard groups. I can tell you that if you like speed and flat trajectory the 240 Gibbs will be pure pleasure. Brass is easy to form using 25-06 brass.

A friend just shot a whitetail last month with mine using the new 87 grain Berger hunting bullet at over 3800 fps. The shot was between 300-400 yards and the deer folded in it's tracks. I took two coyotes at 400-500 yards with the same bullet through the lungs behind the shoulder and had minimal pelt damage with very dead coyotes. The 240 Gibbs is way fun to hunt with using these new bullets. They also have a high BC for a 6mm bullet of that weight.

with a 8 twist you should be thinking 6mm-06 or 6x284, that fast of a twist is a little tight for 90grs 105 berger or 107 sierra would be ideal. at the speeds attainable with a 6x284 even a 115 berger would work.
