6.5X55 Mauser

Has anyone experimented with this round in a modern rifle? What is the velocity / long range potential?

I have a shooting buddy that shoots his 6.5x55 handloads at prairie dogs, and has more than one first round hits at 600+ yards (witnessed). He shoots 95 gr vmax's.

ebd10, I built a 6.5x55 on a savage 110 action, I put a 28", 3 groove, 1 in 8" twist, heavy palma contour pacnor barrel on, I had them throat it for a 123 gr lapua scenar with the base of the bullet at the bottom of the neck.

I haven't done any long range work yet but it shoots sub 1/2" @100 yds and even more impressive is the velocities. I'm getting 3100 fps with the 123 scenars over 50.5 grs of MRP and 2997 fps with 142 matchkings over 49.5 grs of N165.

I have a custom MRC with a 26" fluted barrel that shoots 1/2" groups with 130g accubonds mz velocity is 3000 fps with 44.4g Varget. My older 6.5 loved 120g bullets but this one likes the 130-140g bullets better. Swedes are a sweet caliber and kill like lightning. In a modern rifle you can get the performance the round is capable of. It is a better round than the 260 Rem, 6.5 Credemore or the 6.5x47 Lapua. I routinely get over 3100 fps with Barnes 120 XBT's. The best powder for speed and accuracy in my 6.5 has been Varget. I have tried Reloader 19, 22, IMR 4831, 4350 and Win760 but I keep coming back to the Varget. All things considered it is a great round in a modern rifle.
