Re: 6.5mm-06 ballistics

With plain ole 6.5-06, is there a slight powder capacity advantage with the cartridge using the longer neck of the .270 case necked down vs. the shorter 25-06 case necked up? Obviously, when chambered, the longer neck can be incorporated if using the 270's longer case. Thanks!

JPH, not much capacity gained but the 270's .046" longer neck does give more support to those long high BC bullets, which is why ray romain, though the 6.5 gibbs was originaly designed around a 30/06, used the 270 case as the basis for his reamer, he's built 36 of them for members of the pa 1000 yard BR club.

It looks like the European 6.5mm x 64 Brenneke is an exact copy of the 270 with the long neck that was reduced to .264. This seems like exactly the ballistics I seek. Is this a viable rifle caliber for an American hunter/shooter? Where can both a reamer for chambering and brass be acquired from the US?

I had one built this summer for my son. McGowen barrel 24", 1 in 8.5 twist. Shooting the 130grn Scirocco over 49grn Hybrid 100 powder at 2950fps. Very comfortable as far as pressure. Shot it to 3100 during load development and pressure was still ok. Using Win 25-06 brass.

    Hope this helps.
