6.5mm-06 ballistics

Hello All: Given your experience, can anyone approximate the expected velocity of 130 or 140 gr bullets out of a 25", 9 twist barrel in 6.5mm-06?

Any load information you might be willing to share is also appreciated. Thanks to all.

Nosler number three lists data, I have it scanned on my computer, send a blank email to james720603@HardyNet.com with 6.5 data in the title bar and I'll fire it off to ya
BTW the data calls for around 2800 with a 140, no listing for the 130's though.

the rule of thumb seems to be, 6.5/06/140/2800-2900, 6.5/06AI/140/3000-3100, 6.5 Gibbs/140/3100-3300 (depending on barrel lengths), my personal gibbs sends 140 bergers downrange at 3250.

    Re: 6.5mm-06 ballistics

Thanks for your post. I have plenty of reloading manuals, thanks. Given I currently have 2 super 300 mags and a 30-06, I'm looking for something in .264 with it's superior ballistics when compared to .257 and .270, and .270 is very close to my 30-06 with lighter bullets.

Essentially I want to duplicate 270 Win velocities with .264 bullets; 130 gr Scirocco at about 3150 FPS and 140 gr Partition at about 3025 FPS. I'd like to stay away from wildcats if possible and it sounds like you suggest I can't achieve these ballistics with a 6.5-06. Is there any other option other than belted 264 winchester magnum?

JPH you may want to consider the 6.5-284. I think norma makes brass and savage makes a target rifle (single shot I think). Its accuracy is certainly well documented in 1,000 yard competitions.

this is just my opinion, but I think if you go with a broughton 5C barrel 26-28" long, throat it pretty long and use lapua brass, I'm pretty sure you could push a 140 to 3100+ in a 6.5/06 AI.
If I had it to do over again I would go that route, the kreiger 8 twist on my gibbs is a fine barrel shoots anything very well but it is a lil slow compared to a broughton or hart due to being a cut rifled barrel. and the 6.5/06 AI brass are easier to form, just neck them to 6.5 or else use 25/06 brass, load'em and shoot'em. about any 6.5 that matches 270 velocities other than the 264 wm is a wildcat.

since there is no way you can match the velocity of a 270 with an 06 based case with the same weight bullet of smaller diameter at the same pressure, you either must shoot more pressure or use a longer barrel. to give you an idea of how the gibbs outperforms the others with the same case here is a gibbs round compared to a 270 case

Its basicly a 270 necked to 6.5, shoulder moved foreward to give more capacity and changed to 40 degrees

yep they do, but I can use win brass, and make them using unique powder and corn meal for 1/4 the cost. I have no idea what the "quality" of quality cartridge co brass is.
