6.5-284 shooters, how do these drops compare with yours

Shot on a twelve-foot tall target, zero at one hundred and let the groups form where gravity takes the bullets. Moved firing position in fifty yard increments.

140 A-MAX, 58.0 Ramshot Magnum, Norma brass, Win. primer
No chronographed velocities yet, but these are right up there I believe.

Yds MOA Come-Up
200-1.25 1.25
300-3.75 3.50
350-5.0 1.25
400-6.5 1.50
450-8.0 1.50
500-10.0 2.00
550-11.5 1.50
600-13 1.50
650-14.5 1.50

Then I shot BHA 140's, excellent accuracy out to 700. Might be a very slight difference in 100 yard zero, did this with steel plates instead of the big paper target board.

Yds MOA Come-Up
200-1.25 1.25
300-3.75 2.50
350-5.0 1.25
400-6.5 1.50
450-7.5 1.00
500-9.5 2.00
550-10.5 1.00
600-11 0.50
650-14.5 3.50
700-15.0 0.50

Not sure what happened at 700 - only half a minute up from 650 but the rifle was shooting point of aim with 15 minutes on. Something must be wonkie there. 140's knocked the plates down at least as well as the 168 A-MAX in the .308 WIn. rifles.

Would be interested to see what some other drops are out to 700 or farther.
Thanks

Jason,
Little OT, but are you using RWS primers for all of your accuracy loads now?
I have always used Fed match.

Ian, nice to see a new toy making noise. Fun calibre isn't it?

Here are some drops using my 140gr SST in a 6.5-06. Load is 58.5gr of H4831SC (hot), CCI BR2, in LC brass. Velocity average was 2975fps from a 24" Bevan King barrel. Adjustments are total minutes based on scope turrents (Elite 4200 6X24) and are with a 100yd zero. Drop has also been verified on JBM software to fill in the all the different yardages. Real world shooting agrees with table. Leica 800 Rangefinder.

300yds/ 2.5, 350/ 3.25, 400yds/ 4, 450yds/ 5, 500yds/ 6, 550yds/ 7, 600yds/ 8, 650yds/ 9.5, 700yds/ 11, 750yds/ 13, 800yds/ 15.

I am sure you can see how much flatter the SST's fly. You got to try them. Really Goofy performance.

Also, please note that my comeups are very predictable for each distance. Increase of 1 min for each 50yds until 600yds, then 1.5min. Quite common for drop to increase after 600 to 650yds with a variety of bullets and cals with similar muzzle velocities. Just the way a bullet decelerates.

I have always found that the comeups are like this. Bullets travel in a predictable curve so the amount of elevation adjustments for distances should also increase predictably.

Your comeups most certainly aren't. Some require 1/2 min, others 3.5mins. No way that should be. Either the range is off by a lot (unlikely given the range finders you own), the rifle is bouncing and not shooting repeatably (unlikely with you at the helm) or the scope is pooched (most likely).

I would take a serious look at how those turrents are working. Recheck these drops by shooting again. Hard to imagine they would repeat given the 'bumpy' changes.

Good luck...

Jerry

Will probaly only use them for 1KBR stuff...

Re: 6.5-284 shooters, how do these drops compare with yours

Jerry,
Might be driver-error, what I did was put a target at the top of 12 feet of heavy cardboard on our huge backboard, then shoot at all the distances with the same 100 yard zero on the scope. Scope never changed, only change was all the firing locations. Then, we eyeballed how much drop occured to the center of each group. This is probably where the goof-up occured. The BHA drops were shot on steel plates, one constant firing location and I shot at a bunch of plates situated at the various distances. When the bullet were hitting the center of the plate I called that the zero for the particular distance.
Maybe I was did not shoot enough rounds to create true drops with the first test. All 3-shot groups, but some were very small - sub 0.5 moa or very close all the way out.
Committed to AMAX, might have some SST's tho and will try to shoot some.

Re: 6.5-284 shooters, how do these drops compare with yours

If you want a few SST's to test, just let me know. I love the Amax line and am having a ball with the 162gr 7mm.

Again, more goofy ballistics but what the heck, it works.

I did try the measurement method before but when groups get a bit big, where do you put the 'center'?

I now use a combo of shooting and ballistics program, then confirm with more shooting. I shoot at MOA type rocks/boulders. If I hit, good enough. By repeating at different distances, you quickly learn if the drop chart/rangefinder/and scope are working consistently.

Good luck setting it up. Anymore great hunting stories to tell?

Jerry
