34 in. barrell .30-.378 Weatherby, tips ?

I built a 34. in 3/3 Pac-Nor .30-.378 on a big Hall Single shot. The barrel is straight 1.25 at the muzzle. I have reloaded and shot lots of .300 Weatherby, but never a .30.-378. I am looking for some tips. Here is what I have so far.

Redding type S neck bushing die set.
8 lbs of H50bmg powder (the most likely powder I believe to work in this combo)
1 lb of Retumbo (will try in both the 300 and .30-.378)
1 lb H1000 (will try in both the .300 and .378)
2-3 lbs of 7828 I use in the .300

I have the .30-.378 reemed to shoot Sierra 240's. The barrel is a 1-10 twist. I am hoping for at least 3200 fps out of the 240's ???

Any other bullets I ought to try? might try some 220 Sierra's as well. Is there a ULD RBB bullet that is heavier than 240 ?

Thanks,

John

Henson bullets

You might want to try the heaviest Henson Al tipped 308 that will work in the 10 twist. I'm most interested in the 220. But they are saying that bullet needs an 8 twist. Check out the current post about the AL tipped bullets. That post is just a little down on this page.

Or you could try the Wildcat bullets. Not sure how much more aerodynamic they are than the SMK's, but I would guess it's a fair amount of BC gain.

John, Sounds like a fine rig. The H-50 bmg or H-5010 are good powders, so is US 869. Haven't shot 240's, but have shot 190 and 220 Smkhp's. The H-5010 and H-50 bmg both need Fed 215M primers (or 215's). I'm having to try the 215's because I'm just about out of 215M's. The 869 may work with CCI LRM primers or Win LR's. Don't know yet. The Retumbo or H-1000 didn't work in my gun. The best hunting bullet looks like the 200 Accubond. My .30 x .378 has a 27 1/2" 10 twist Walther barrel.

Good shooting, Tom

John,
I believe Richard makes a 265 gr and a 290 gr ULD bullet in 30 cal. I was looking at a fast twist 300 RUM two years ago. I don't know if a 1-10 twist would stabilize those bullets, wouldn't bet on the 290.
The 240 gr SMK has a pretty nice BC and ought to come blazing out of that 34" Wby at a pretty good clip. Just a guess, I would think you could hit 3300 fps. Pretty awesome!

I have a 32" HS percision on one of my 30-378's. I shoot 210 Bergers with 98 gr of H-1000 and a 215 Fed gm. I get 3130 for an average Vel. and it shoots 1/2 moa. I know it is not what you asked for bullet wise, but maybe you can adjust. I will add it is very happy there and I have never pushed it further but I feel there is some room left.
