.338 WM Barrel Length

Hello,
I have a .338 winchester mag and would like to turn it into a short range brush gun. I want to shorten the barrel but dont know how short I should go. I have been thinking about 21" the barrel is 28.5" now with a muzzle brake.

Re: .338 WM Barrel Length

I cut a 338WM down to 22" for same reason. Worked great and didn't lose as much velocity as I expected.

I think with right powder yours would run fine. I wouldn't even be afraid to go with a 20". I used 65.5gr of N150 with 225 Accubond, WIN brass, BR-2 primer and OAL, base to tip, was 3.410 to use mag well. Averaged 2700 fps, with low muzzle pressure and super clean burning.

PM me if you need some short barrel data to get you rolling. Just be sure and let me know which bullet your gonna shoot.

Re: .338 WM Barrel Length

I will be using Nosler 210 part with either H4350 or RL19 and CCI BR or CCI Mag primers WW Brass as i have lots of these components. I have been shooting the 210 partitions with 78 Grs of H4831 SC and Rem Mag primer at 3050fps oal is 3.455

Re: .338 WM Barrel Length

H4350 should work great in a 21in barrel. Start at 70.0 and work up. Should top out around 74.0

RL-19 is a little slow for a 21 inch tube. RL-15 would work better than 19 for that short of barrel with a light, for a 338, bullet. If you want to try the RL-19 for kicks, start at 74.0 and work up to 78.0gr.

What kind of action you working with? I have an new OEM Ruger 338WM barrel you can have for nothing if you need a test barrel to chop and shoot data before you cut your good one.

Re: .338 WM Barrel Length

Thanks for the offer but its a Browning A Bolt Stainless Stalker. I have 225 and 250 gr Accubonds that i use in my Rum that I can try. The reason I am leaning towards the partition is i figure they would perform better at close range than the accubonds.
