338 RUM questions

Hello again,

I am going to build a "guest gun" and was wandering what velocities you guys were getting out of your 338 Remington Ultra Mags with 225 Nosler Accubonds in 26" barrels. Thanks in advance.

James

Check out this web page for some possibilities. My 338 has a 28 inch barrel and I guess I haven't chronied it yet. I know that 5" high at 100 gives me a zero at 440 from the time I checked at the range. I just use it out to 500 yards on elk and know about where to hold for those ranges.

Some advice that you can consider as you wish though... I don't know exactly what you mean by a "guest gun". If you mean allowing others that are unfamiliar with that gun to use it, you might consider a muzzle brake. You wouldn't want to have someone dot their eye with the scope of this beast.

Good Luck.

Re: 338 RUM questions

I get 3050 fps comfortably from my 26" 338RUM but it is ported so figure 24" of effective barrel length. I would guess 3100-3150 fps from a 26" barrel. Depends on how hot you want to load it.

Re: 338 RUM questions

All my long range barrels are "braked". It looks like 3200-3300 is going to be the maximum I will be able to acheive out of the 26-27 inch barrel. Thanks again for the input and keep the information coming.

Thanks for the information......... I have one more question. Since Nosler is making 300 RUM brass, and no one makes quality 338 RUM brass, what prevents the handloader from necking up the Nosler 300 RUM brass to 338 and then running it through a 338 RUM FL size die to create "quality 338 RUM brass"? Thanks in advance for your thoughts on this.
