The 338 RUM is the Remington factory SAAMI spec 338 cartirdge built on a shortened 300 RUM case.
The 338 Edge is the 300 RUM necked up to 338 cal with no other changes. The Edges hold 6 to 8 grains more powder for about 100 FPS more velocity.

What jwp475 said is spot on.

No matter what I do w/the 338 RUM it lags 100 to 200 fps behind the Edge.

But I have a sporter barrel on the RUM, (waaa Waaa Waaa, cry, cry, cry )

338 Edge vs. 338 Rum

The gain you get in velocity(thats if you do) of the Edge over the Rum is really not that much considering the extra powder recoil etc. It's hard to beat what you get from the Rum with a 26" tube vs. the Edge with what a 30" plus the extra weight if you are going to hunt with it. The 7mm,300 338 and 375 all are from the parent case 404 Jefferies with little differences so as they couldn't be chambered in the wrong rifle as the insurance issue pops up according to a Remington source.

I suppose if a 10% increase in case capacity is meaningless to you then there is no difference.

I have a 338 Lapua built on a Rem.700 action with a 5.5X25 NXS scope and the total wieght is 11.6 pounds with a 30" barrel, not a big deal to hunt with IMHO

jwp475,

I got dibs on that barrel when you get tired of it.

Per this thread I think a better discussion would be the differences between the Lapua and the RUM. That should get fairly heated discussion going.

I don't the nads to start it though.

I apologize in advance for the flagrant hijack. A new thread is in order should the subject be continued.light bulb

So is it 6 to 8 grains or is it 10%? The RUM holds more than 60 grains of powder. Right?
