Re: .338 300gr expansion tests

I shot a coyote at 187 yards with a 300gr hybrid launched at 2930fps. The coyote was slightly quartering towards, and was hit through the onside shoulder, leaving a roughly 6" hole out the farside right by what was the end of the ribs. Good thing I wasn't looking for a pelt...

my personal experience has been no expansion or total devastation with little left for eating.

Re: .338 300gr expansion tests

I shot a Red Deer spiker at 49 yards with my Edge, 1-9twist, 300 SMK at 2830fps.
It was the first deer I shot with it, so much for my LR rig
The deer was facing me quartering, it hit high on the shoulder & took out 6-8 inchs of back bone, needless to say he went right down
The retrieved bullet weighed 125 grains & was intact for approx 1/4" from the base.
I was very impressed that it didn't completely blow up, if I had had my 338 Improved it may have been a different story but the end result would have been the same
You gotta love electronic earmuffs, no time for ear protection in this case, just as well I had them on

Similar results w/ 300gr SMK's as the rest who've posted. High shoulder shot on a small whitetail buck at 127 yards w/ my Lapua - entrance hole was the size of a nickel, exit hole was the size of a softball.

I was just wondering how they would work out if the instance arose where you needed to pull the trigger at a closer distance?
a generic 30-06 will do anything you ask for, and not beat you up. You also might look for a .270 or a .280 as well.
