.338 300gr expansion tests
Has anyone done any short range (inside 300 yds), higher velocity (2700-2900 fps), expansion tests on any of the .338 cal, 300 gr bullets? All I have seen anywhere are the longer distances. I was just wondering how they would work out if the instance arose where you needed to pull the trigger at a closer distance?

Re: .338 300gr expansion tests
I too am interested. I would like to see the results from even closer say inside 50 yards. Just in case Im in bear country and hiking then stumble into Yogi bear on a trail. Just in case type of thing.
Eric Wallace (Ewallace) has been 10yards from a Elk I believe when shot! I think it was a 350gr smk though..?

Re: .338 300gr expansion tests
I shot a Deer at 220 Yards with the 300 SMK out of my 338 Lapua, about 2800 FPS at the muzzle. And a Bull Elk at 150 yards. The bullet coomes unglued at the close distance (inside of 300 yrads. The amount of internal damage is VERY impresive.

Sounds like they work well at both short and long distances. I was just afraid they would pencil through at shorter distances.

Re: .338 300gr expansion tests
Here is some of what I found in a elk shot at 10 yards with a .338 300g SMK at 3050fps shot was in the hind quarter right side and the jacket and some led fragments were found in the left front shoulder. The elk went down instantly

Why would you think that a bullet would be less likely to expand up close where the velocity is higher?
Pointed bullets that do not expand are notoriously famous for turning of course and or tumbling. The " so called "pencil through" theory doesn't hold water
