Umm, well 800+ is significantly more difficult for anything.

Got a guy at one of the LR ranges that shoots 308 to 1000 every month. 168s but SMKs not Hybrids.

All this, at similar recoil, less than 1 inch longer overall length, and similar cost for both rifle and rounds.

100 FPS gain might not seem like much, but 1 000 yards is a long shot, at least to me.

I am not criticizing the 308 win, and yes it is proven, I am just curious if there is any other advantage over the 30-06 other than the logistics of carrying longer bullets. Of course I am assuming that a setup for 1 000 yard shots is a bolt action.
I agree I actually think the 06 is far superior to the 308 but that's my opinion and buy saying that I probably just started a cartridge war but I love the debate anyway anyway I think that he already had the 308 26in so he's trying to get the most out of what he's got I could be wrong though....

Sure, thats what ftr is. The 175 smk is the typical weapon of choice for ftr, and lately the 210's and 215's are becoming the norm. The 168 is the dog of the 30 cals, its fine for a medium range hunting bullet but in my opinion its the worst bullet you can shoot lr with a 308. The 185 vld gave me significantly less wind drift than the 168, and with the 215 hybrid i get half of the drift i had with the 185 at sea level.

800 yds is childs play with the 215, where mine is still hitting with 1400 ft/lbs of energy.

Shoot the 168 and get back to me on the difference between 600 and 800 yards. I shot about 2000 of em figuring it out.

To divergent from the original topic.

While you are correct about the past and current trend for FTR, I shoot F-Open. The other guy shoots FTR.

Re: 308 Winchester, 168 Hybrids, 26", how far?

I don't shoot comps, but would like to someday.

I do however, love how the 210 Bergers shoot out of my .308 Win. I have shot 168's for well over a decade (since I built my first .308), and they've never let me down. I know, I know...I'm not as old as some of yall, but that doesn't mean I don't have any experience or knowledge to share as well. But I am truly loving how the 210's shoot. The 168's and 175's are nice. I am experimenting with the 185 VLD's in my .30-06 AI right now, since it has a 12" twist barrel (booo!), but it was a free brand new 26" varmint take-off barrel, so I wasn't complaining.

I am going to try the 210's just to see if it will stabilize them. If so, I might have a ringer.

I have been meaning to try the 185 VLD's in my .308 as well. I might have to give that a try soon.

I absolutely love the 185 vlds in my 308. They do everything well, and they have expanded well on game.
