.308 LR hunting bullet

Hi
I have a standard .308 which is an older Omark with a 26inch barrel. (these have been used as fullbore guns in NZ and Aus for years). I was hoping to use it on game out to 700yards ish. I will be shooting small game (wild goats, wallabys) mainly. I have been told the 168gn A-max is a very good projectile. has anyone used this bullet? I was trying to stay away from Bergers as they are $90 for a 100 pack and Im hoping to do alot of shooting and I dont have alot of money.
I made up some 150gn FMJ the other day that I was given and shot two 1/2 MOA groups at 100yards and shot a few rabbits at 200yards(My brother shot a hare in the head at 220yards) so the gun shoots ok just need the projectiles.
Thanks

Do you know your barrel's twist rate?

I suggest the 208 AMAX over Reloader 17 powder if your twist is 1:10- 1:12.

Use Win brass and work up from 46ish grains.

That's what I'd do.

For whitetail I run the 178amax over varget at 2740 from a 24" 10 twist, bullet touching lands, shoots .25 moa, never used it on one at 700 but it does great at 572 I know.

Re: .308 LR hunting bullet

I think the twist is 1 in 13" or 14". im not sure and will check it when i get home. The barrels are made to shoot 155gn as these are the heaviest you are alowed in fullbore shooting.(thats what I understand anyway). would the 178gns(BC 0.495) work?windage for 178gns 5.28MOA. windage for the 168gns(BC 0.475) 5.27 MOA.
That was useing 2750fps for 178gn and 2850 fps for 168gn and 10mph wind..
I just sorta made up those velocitys and put them into a programe to get an idea of the windage. are those velocities realistic? thanks for the help I didnt realy consider the heavier bullets as i thought they would be too slow.
both loads have about 1000ft.lbs of energy at 700-750yards which is heaps for a goat.
