.308 Build in Long Action

Hi all,

I am considering a new build.

I am considering a .308 or a .260rem. Prob going with the 260rem. I realize that the .308 has a large option of bullets for reloading, but with the heaver ones, I will be digging out my 300wm.

The .260 seems like the way to go for some of the lighter bullets.

The questions are:
Is it a big deal if I decide to go with a long action instead of a short action. Seems like the long actions are easier to get ahold of, and living in canada, the "cheaper" rifles like the stevens 200 are still about $350 if I wanna strip one down.

It will be going into an XLR Stock. So, does that mean that if I go with a long action I will have to get a 300WM mag to fit the chassis properly?

TKS for the info,
JPB

    30-06, 270, 280 is what you will need for a LA 308, 260 or 6.5x284.

Im not sure that I understand what you are trying to say here...Are you saying that I will have problems with building a 308 on a long action?

    Or are you saying that if I use a .308 I must use it from a 30-06, 270, or a 280.
Not really sure why that would matter, seeing that bolt faces are easliy swapped out (savage action).

If you want a 6.5 and a long action, I would go 6.5x55 Swede. you can have it throated shorter than normal and eliminate the freebore, and it would give you more options then a 260.
