300WM - N160 or N165? - Fed 210 or 215?

My new rifle arrives in 2 weeks time. It'll be my first 300WM.
I'm trying to work out which powder and primers to get for it.
Having had good experience with N140 in my 308, brand loyalty leads me to consider N160 or N165.
Anyone have a view?

In the same vein; I have read of individuals experiencing quite large velocity SDs when using magnum primers.
Anyone recommend Fed 210 (rather than 215) in the 300 WM?

Brown Dog,

I recommend H1000 and Federal 215 Match Primers. They work well for me with heavy bullets in the .300.

I like the IMR 4831 in my 300 Winnie. Especially when combined with 175gr. SMK's
LETHAL!!

RL22 is also a great powder with the .300WM..sakofan..Be glad to share some loads if you name the bullet..
I always use the Fed 215M's...I just do.

Brown Dog,

V V N-165 is a very flexible and worthwhile powder for the 300 WM. It is best when used with the heavier bullets. I had to buy the 8lb. carboy when I started using it for reloading 22-6mm AI, 6mm AI, 25-06 AI, 280 AI and the 300 WM.

Re: 300WM - N160 or N165? - Fed 210 or 215?

The n160 has a burn rate between 4350 and 4831 so may be a little fast for heavier bullets. The N165 is a very slow powder, around Re 25/Retumbo/H870 so could be a good choice for heavier bullets.

H4831SC and H1000 are excellent choices too.

the only way to know about primers is to try them. If the 210M work, great. If you are getting any hangfires, unburnt powder, erratic ignition, then go with a CCI BR2 or Fed 215M. The win mag is not that big of a case and if the Viht powders ignite easily, you shouldn't need a magnum primer.

I have only used F215 and the S.D. has been low. RL22 works well for me with 180gr bullets. Similar burning rates should also work well. The closest VV would be N560 with N160 being a little faster and N-165 a little slower. Practically you should not see much difference since the burning rates are so close. The best website for determining burning rates is http://stevespages.com/table3.html.

Crispin,
Seeing the whole quote in 13th Century French makes you realise why it's rather paraphrased for T-shirts!
