I vote WSM, advantages...short action, longer brass life, no belt, there is just something great about that short fat powder column, better ignition.

The 300 win, 7 rm, 300wby etc. is based off of the 300 H&H idea of how to headspace off of the belt on the case vs. headspace off the shoulder, thus the belted magnum fadd. The weird part is that the belt is completely worthless and un-needed if you headspace off the shoulder, wich is what almost everyone does for accuracy and case life. Call it a marketing gimic or a way of setting yourself apart, I dont know wich, but the Holland & Holland guys started the fadd. Its not so bad to work around, you just headspace off the shoulder after youve fired it, and the belt becomes just another useless step you have to work around. Its also likely the most common place for a case to fail.(where the belt and case wall meet).
The wsm case is based on the 404 jefery case (no belt) and necked down. So all headspacing is at the shoulder.

Re: 300 wsm versus 300 winmag

My question is I am buying a 300 Win Mag Sendero in the next week. The more I read the more questions I have. I want to get into the Longrange shooting/hunting and have my heart set on the 300 win mag, but I want to make sure I am buying the right gun. I want something that is going to shoot a long ways and hit hard when it gets there. Is WSM going to do that?

Yes the wsm does that. However if you have your heart set on the win mag GO FOR IT! Its a great L/R caliber and cartrige. There is nothing at all wrong with the win mag. Were all kinda gun nerds, and enjoy splittin hairs. The difference is very slim in performance, with the edge probably going to the win mag for heavy high bc bullets. You just have to put up with belted cases. Who cares, folks have been doing it successfully for years. Point is, Theres always a trade off for every gain. Its funny how wrapped up we get in the most minute details.
I love the 300 win mag. It was my favorite all time cartrige for years. It wasnt till I started handloading that I got so dang grumpy, and picky. My tastes have changed a bit, and now I favor the wsm. Strictly a personal preferance, based on what I like to load for, and use a rifle for.
A 300 win mag in a Rem Sendaro will take anything that needs taking near or far. Its a great choice, and a notoriously accurate rifle too.
Like I said we are, in all reality, splitting hairs on this issue, but its fun to discuss the finer points right down to the nitty gritty with people of like mind.
There is no clear cut winner without very defined criteria, and in this case theyre very, very close even with defined criteria.
The only proper choice as I see it is to own both......... but Im tipping my own scales toward the wsm first. hehehehe

Re: 300 wsm versus 300 winmag

I have been doing some calling and pricing guns. One of the local gun shops has the Rem 700 SPS SS in Win Mag for a little over $500 new and a used 300 WSM in a Savage weather warrior with the accu-trigger, stock, etc. in the middle $400. Both basically the same, just different makes. Both have clip magazines, i prefer the hinged floor plate, but i guess beggars can't be choosers. Only thing if a person looses a clip they are sol when in the field a thousand miles from home. I have a HV savage and the thing will drive tacks at any distance. Has anyone had any experience with the new REM model and their new trigger. Any advice on this one.

Re: 300 wsm versus 300 winmag

I'm a huge remington fan, but dont really care for the new adjustable trigger. It's lawyer proof, but a shade better than the non adjustable offering. I think the savage accu trigger may feel a little better.
