300 win mag and 165 accubond?

any thoughts on a plain ole 300 win mag shooting 165 accubond at 3300 fps for a 600-700 yd derr and elk rifle, so far it will hold .75 moa out to 600 yds... or do i need a super mag or a kirby special...

The 165g is good for deer at those ranges, but I would add that for extra insurance, and for more power at elk at those ranges, you need at least the 180g and the better choice would be the 200g AB. Just my opinion though. Wind is your biggest factor at those ranges and the bigger bullets just buck the wind better, not to mention they hit harder and retain more velocity downrange...

3300fps is pretty easily attainable in a 300 WM if your using the right powder, RL-22 for example. I'm sure it would be close to MAX load though. Heck 3100fps is pretty easily attainable with a 180g. Differnt chambers, throats, yadda yadda, results may vary up to 100fps. Myabe he got a fast barrel, maybe you got a slow barrel. Tons of little things could make or break a 100fps.

Re: 300 win mag and 165 accubond?

I am shooting IMR 4831 in my 300WM getting 3240fps with 165 gr Hornady InterBonds. That's all I needed accuracy wise, so I didn't go up anymore. That's in a 24 5/8" barrel. I guess I "could" get 3300 fps, but I may not be able to tell anyone about it if I did.

Re: 300 win mag and 165 accubond?

i am shooting 76 gr rel 22 26in barrel and 3293 for an ave, of 30 rounds. the ballistics calculator i downloaded from this site dont show much diff in ft lbs at 600 yds compared to a 180 accu at 3100. i dont think an elk could tell the difference.. i have a 300 stw that shoots 180 accu at 3285 fps shot over 30 head of game with it, trying to build a 71/2lb rifle that dont kick like a mule.
