300 Weatherby build for long range Elk

Ok guys I need some help, I want to build a rifle for long range Elk hunting next year in Montana. I have enough points I SHOULD get one. What I want to do is build a rifle for long range elk hunting between 300-600 yards. I was thinking about building it off of a Weatherby Vanguard in 300 Weatherby then replacing the barrel, stock, trigger, and whatever else you guys might suggest. I am in the dark on this a little, so any help would be nice. Another thing is I don't want to go with some ridiculously heavy barrel. Honestly, I was thiking about a Shilen #2 contour barrel. I would like to keep the rifle at less than $1200 plus optic. The scope I am thinking about is the Vortex Viper PST 4-16x50.

Great choice have a use a 300 Weby for years on Elk, Bear, etc. . . I built one on a Remington Action with a Shilen barrel. Remington from time to time will Chamber the 700 in Weatherby Mag calibers. Have a Leupy 6.5x20 TMR works great, dials great. Look around. I have had great luck with the 165 Grn Sirocco and more recently 190 Grn Berger VLD. Trajectory is great/consistent. 600 yards should not be an issue energy wise with most loads.

If your buying a new one I would be surprised if you need to go through all that trouble, the trigger just needs tuned up and it is a very good trigger, I've shot a few elk with a stock Vanguard in a 300WBY in those ranges with little issues except my poor choice in bullets.

What kind of bullets have you guys had the best luck with? Are you thinking just buy the Vanguard and leave it alone?

The new S2 version is arriving in stores now.

Though I have not seen the new plastic stock I would probably still restock it and bed it into a Bell & Carlson Medalist. Shoot it and see how it does - it will probably do exceptionally well.

Do you know what the street price on the S2 is? According to the website it is about the same as the S1. I was thinking about restocking it to a B&C Medalist with a mercury recoil reducer in it then glass bedding it. Probably the best stock option.

Jeremy the SS S2 would be about $550 and the blued would be $450, blued are in stock at my wholesaler. I think you need a 338 Sin though ;) haha P.S. also have Viper PSTs available. Come over and check one out if you haven't looked through one.
