Re: 300 RUM barrel life

My barrel on my 300 RUM is SS, but its just the factory barrel. I have put very close to 1000 rounds in my rifle in the past 2 years. I can see my accuracy is suffering. I cleaned and maintained the barrel to the very best of my knowledge. It used to shoot .5 MOA out to 800 yards, now its about MOA or sometimes little bigger. I just need to screw on a match grade SS barrel and have an eye opening experience. I have to admit though, probly 400-500 rounds I spent just load testing different bullets. Very stupid idea in a caliber of this size. When I get my next barrel, I will stick with 1 bullet and load. No more switching around finding a load for every weight of bullet. Stupid idea.

Re: 300 RUM barrel life

rem,

Just for an experiment, run about half a Tubbs Final Finish through it and see if accuracy returns a bit.....

Something about smoothing up the "leade"?

Going to use it on a new factory sporter barrel an see what it does. Should be interesting.

Justa tho't....

Re: 300 RUM barrel life

CM stands for Crome-Moly steel and SS stands for Stainless Steel.
CM barrels are not as dense as SS barrels due to their structural makeup. CM is harder material than SS but SS is more resistant to hot plasma gas cutting (basicaly throat erosion)and the internal finish can be made to finer standards than CM making for a smoother bore which helps in barrel life.
Kreiger states that they have seen no differance in barrel life between CM or SS. but other barrel makers say differant? who knows.
Maybe , someone need to have two barrels made one CM one SS have them cut with the same reamer shoot the same exact loads through them at the same rate of fire and see just which one wears out first.
Personaly I'd like to see a barrel made out of one of the super alloys like Hastloy , inconell or Monell , but I'm sure that the cost would be totaly unrealistic.

Litr-Moscow ,barrel life is measured usable accuracy , that can mean when a barrel goes south ofr a BR shooter its groups have opened up to .3" but that is outstanding accuracy for a deer hunter whose accuracy maybe bad when groups get to 1"
I would think that if the rifle shoots to 1/2" new and its chambered in 300WM that it should be good to 2000 rounds if its cared for properly , proper cleaning , not shot to hot and so on.

Re: 300 RUM barrel life

Unless you really worked it very hard and hot I would expect to get 1700 rounds out of it b4 I was ready to retire it.

2K should not be totally out of the realm, but very close to cooked here.

It all depends on what you want, need, expect and can get out of it yourself.

As to the SS vs CM debate I've yet to of found that the one outlasts the other. Personally I do feel that the SS is generally a bit easier for clean ups (and I do dote on Schneiders).

I feel that button verse cut is more of an issue in life of a tube than SS and CM.

But, that is only this one fellas thoughts.

Make it your best day

Hi LitrMoscow,
welcome to the site.
The T3 Tactical ls a great rifle but go for the 24"(600mm) barrel with the 300WM
Personally i would go for the Stainless Varmint instead in the same cal or 300WSM.
In my opinion you should be looking at 2500+ barrel life.

Ian.

I am curious as to what makes of Rifles you can buy in Russia.

Good bore rod and bore guide will protect the throat and bore.

Only mag I have found that seems to differ from that is the WSMs. For some reason we are getting at least 2x barrel life with hot loads and max pressures.

Only 1000 rounds? Really? I have a Winchester Model 70 Super Grade in .300 RUM that I have put 1,500 rounds through and it still shoots great. My best group ever with this rifle was just recently - 10 rounds under half inch at 100 yards, not counting the cold bore fouling shot which went slightly wide. All 11 rounds still went under 7/8".

What bullet, powder and charge, and MV for your load?
