.300 RUM and 150g CT BT at 800 yards

Tuesday morning was a rather nice, warm, dead calm day. I decided to test out my 150g CT BT's at 800 yards for the first time since working up the load a little over a month ago. After only testing 3 loads I found what I thought would be good enough for antelope and deer hunting out to about 800 yards. The load is as follows, 150g CT BT, 105g of H-1000, Rem Case, Fed 215, OAL=3.660", 3650fps. First 3 shot group with this load was .295", Second group was .360". The rifle is a .300 RUM LSS with a trigger job down to 2 3/4 lbs. Other than that, rifle is completely out of the box. Scope is the newer Leupold VX2, 6-18, matte, fine duplex, target. After shooting the first shot to warm the barrel, I shot 3 more very carefully off a bench rest at 800 yards. After the long couple minute drive to the target, I was astonished at what I saw. I saw my 3 shots in a little triangle about 3.5", all 3 shots even hit my 12" red painted bullseye on plywood, and only about 3 inches from the dead center aiming point, they did not hit 8-12 inches low like the 200g SMK and AB were, so I know my clicks are dead on to at least 800 yards, all 3 shots woulda hit even a coyote. My 200g SMK 3 shot group was 4" at 800 yards. I have not yet grouped the 200g Accubonds at 800 yards, but I did at 525 and they shot 1.5". Like I have said before, this rifle really continues to amaze me with its superb accuracy out of the box. I simply cannot believe it. Just thought I would keep everyone posted on how my .300 RUM is treating me.

Long range shooting is a process that ends with a result. Once you start to focus on the result (where the shot goes, how big the group is, what your buck will score, what your match score is, what place you are in...) then you loose the capacity to focus on the process.
