Re: 280 AI replacement for 270 Win.

I've fired a minimum of 7 different powder charges with RL17. 7 with H1000. 15 different powder charge/primer combinations with Retumbo.

Retumbo is providing the fastest MV. Then RL17, then H1000. H1000 yields the lowest ES & SD, and a slight advantage in accuracy and consistency of groups.

Not quite done with load development yet, but the ES of 58 with RL-17 pretty much eliminates it for my LRH.

What do you consider acceptable ES/SD for LRH?

How many rounds also counts. I'm pretty excited when I get 20 and 9 over 10 rounds. On the other hand I've gotten 0 and 0 and horrific groups.

Been there, done that! Can anybody explain that? I have a load in with 15 ES that shots bad at 500, but my load with 30 ES shoots tiny groups at the same distance!

I have learned that my chronograph readings are for reference only. When I was shooting at various distances to get data to have a turret built I finally had the light bulb come on. Shot very same loads over 3 different chronographs. Called the manufacturer up of the chrony I use and was told they are accurate to+ or - 3%. On 3000 fps that is a 180fps difference total. I will always use actual shooting data over a chronograph readings any day. If you are not sure of this call the manufaturer of the chronograph you are using and ask them for their accuracy limitations.

No doubt that there is a +\- margin of error in the chrony's. I bet it is usually a bit tighter than 3% but that is the largest acceptable.

It depends on the cartridge. I'm having trouble getting my ES below 30 and my SD below 12 with my 280 RCBS. Guys that shoot longer ranges than I, and shoot a lot more than I have a goal of SDs less than 10.

Some cartridges produce low ES and SD than others. After I've worked at it a bit, I end up deciding on the load that seems to give reasonable ES/SD for my cartridge/rifle, and sufficient accuracy to shoot/hit game at 900 to 1000 yds.

With the ES of 58, I was way above any ES that I would consider using for LRH.
