25 WSSM vs 25-06

I am thinging of having a 25 wssm gun built, or maybe buy a good one..

I hear the velocity is pretty close to the 25-06... with less powder...
My 25-06 shoots the 115 VLD's the best out of it's 1:10 twist... but has trouble with 85's launching over 3400 fps (say 3500-3600-3700 fps)..
Would it be practicle to have a barrel in 1:12 twist... I really do not need a 1000 yard cotote gun with the 115's, rather a 400-500-600 at longest with the 85's...
I know the 85's are good quick Animal killers, almost cutting coyotes in half..
I have not seen results of the 115's

although expansion sometimes can play a backseat to velocitys shocking devestation..

Anyone have any data on the 25 wssm?

Re: 25 WSSM vs 25-06

I don't have any experience with the 25WSSM but i do with the 223WSSM and the 243WSSM.I also have 4 25-06's and one 25-06 Ackley improved with a 12 twist Krieger barrel and a 0.285 neck. The reamer the factory ses in the 243 WSSM puts the heavy bullets way back into the case.If you were going to have a rifle built in 25 WSSM i would recommend picking the bullet of your choice and seating it so the boattail to bearing surface junction sits 0.050 in front of the neck-shoulder junction of the case.I would then send 3 such empty rounds to Dave Kiff at PPG to get your reamer built. The WSSM brass has very thick necks which usually isn't an accuracy aid.In the 25 caliber rounds mentioned above i have found no accuracy when loading light to moderate loads as they all prefer heavy loads. The thick neck in this case is a plus as it helps hold the bullet tightly creating pressure.I would try 100 gr nosler ballistic tips for dogs,110 Fowlers for accuracy, and 117 Sierras for deer.
The factory 243WSSM has so much bullet in the powder the oal is about the same as the 223.

Re: 25 WSSM vs 25-06

Lynn, is the 25-06 you talk about that shoots the heavy bullets better than the light ones, the one that has the 1:12 twist??
I would love to have a 25 cal that shoots the 85's well, but I also like to shoot the 115 berger VLD's.. I know we can not have optimal with both..
The 115 VLD I shoot will touch th lands and the bearing part of the bullet will almost be too far into the case to grip, the Redding BR dies I have I changed around a expander and found one that was just slightly smaller, seemd to help...
how much vel do you get out of that 243 wssm with 80-85-90's??

Re: 25 WSSM vs 25-06

I have a love/hate thing with .25 caliber cartridges. I'm an addict I guess.

I've had 3 .257s and 4 25-'06s. Only one, of all things, a Ruger 77 RL (tang safety vintage) in .257, shot well. I eventually got one of the .25-'06s, a Ruger 77 VT, to shoot well but it took 2 years and a lot of work. I had a SF Sendero, which I expected to do well, that was a real _dog_. In spite of that, I've got a Winchester 70 "coyote" in .25 WSSM backordered.

My thought is the .25 WSSM looks like a scaled up 6 ppc. I'm real interested to see how it does with 100 grain ballistic tips, 115 grain VLDs, and so on.

I'm sure once it's here and I get some time to work with it, I'll post my results.

If anyone has .25 WSSM load data, please pass it along. I've been searching but so far, no luck.

I would like to get a 25 wssm... probably a cutom barrl one, say 30 inchs.. probably make up plus some vel over the 26 inch 06 case...
I'm thinking of a 1-12 twist to work better with the 85 Nosler BT..
I would like to achive 3600-3700 fps.. with this .331 BC drag bullet.

Re: 25 WSSM vs 25-06

I had a 25 wssm for a few years. I used it only outwest and proofed to do a Great job on mule deer. It had very little recoil which was nice for I'm small build. Had gots of fun shooting prairie dogs with it. I reload the following.
For deer: 115gr. NOSLER BT with 44 grains of IMR 4350. VEl. 2940
For dogs: 87gr. SPITZER with 47 grains of IMR 4350. Vel. 3276
You can find more data at: data.hodgdon.com
I sold the rifle due to health keeping me from going outwest. I still have dies,2 boxes of Nosler 115 gr. bullets, 1 3/4 boxes of Speer 87 gr. bullets. 60 or so new cases and 200 or so primers. Anyone wanting to purchase this can reach me at pbronetime69@yahoo.com
Good luck with your 25 wssm, I sure did.
Tom
