243ai or 6-284

I have a 243ai 1:10 Kreiger that is new but the chamber was poorly cut. Chamber has to be recut trying to decide if I want to do it in the 243ai or 6-284. Will be used for coyotes and pds. Bbl is 251/2" and plan to shoot 95gr SMK's and already have dies and brass for 243ai. Any thoughts from guys who have used either of these. Thanks for any input.

Find a 'smith that can cut a good chamber and have him cut the threads off, re-thread the tenon, and re-chamber to .243AI. You already have dies and brass. The only place the 6mm-284 might 'shine' is with bullets in the 105g. - 115g. weight range because of its greater capacity, and then, not by much. In the real world you won't be any further ahead with a 6-284 rather than .243AI. just my 2 cents

Sorry to hear about your chamber. I used a 1/10 twist Hart barrel for my 243AI so far been a good combination for the 80gr to 100gr bullets.

I used to shoot a 6x284 back in the early 80's set up for the 68/70gr bullets then had one done for the VLD bullets. I just had a 284 build it replace the 6.5x284 I was shooting.


I like both cases. I think doing the 6x284 you be about like the 240Wby, Hodgdon Manual #26 (1992) has reloading data for both 6x284 and 240Wby with 6x284 use just alittle less powder.

In your post you mentioned you want the rifle to shoot coyotes and pds. If you want any mileage out of the barrel, stick to the .243 AI. Use the Lapua brass, have it chambered for a no turn neck, and never look back.

The 10 tw barrel that you have will handle all the bullets up to the 105 gr. There's quite and assortment to find something it likes while doing load development.

I have a custom 240 WBY that spits out the 105 VLD's at a blazing 3380 fps, which is head and heels above the 243, all at the expense of eating the throat away vigorously. The 6-284 is not far behind the .240 WBY. I don't care about mileage in my 240 WBY, I'll just chamber another when this one goes south...
