243 Win - Varmints (coy) & Targets

Hi everyone,

Been studing from this site for months now. Have been a coyote decoy & call hunter for a long time now - 75 yards & less using a 22 mag. in the woods of northern Wisconsin. I now have a piece of property that has a very large field in it 400 yards X 800 yards (60+acres).

I have a Remington 243 700 Mountain Rifle DM which has a 9.25 twist. I want to rebarrel this rifle to a 12 twist to handle lighter bullets better. I would like to use the Full Metal Jacket bullets to save on the pelt if possible, plus enjoy the target shooting and coyote hunting out to 400 yards. I do reload. I would also be doing a trigger job on it and put a leupold vx-lll 3.5 x 10 -40 on it.

What do you folks think? This is strictly a long range target shooting and coyote rifle.

Thank you very much!!

Try the berger 60gr or 66gr ld bullet out of your factory barrel. It is not very often that you will get an exit.

I would stick with the 1-9.25 twist. it will shoot the lighter stuff ok but if you go with a 1-12 you won't be able to ever shoot any heavy pills and if you plan on tipping over yotes at 800 yards you are going to need a heavier bullet
just my two cents

I agree with LeftyM77. My .243 with a 1:9.25 twist handles 55 gr BT's just fine at 3750 fps. It also shoots 100 gr bullets just as well.

Question to anyone: Will a slower twist give the light bullets more velocity? By how much?

my 2 cents worth......

stay with the barrel you've got and work up a load with 100gr sierra match kings....forget the FMJ's......i have done extensive testing on coyotes and FMJ's....they dont work.......if you punch them through the lungs they will run for miles before dying and you may never find them......if you hit a shoulder or spine they blow big holes anyway....the sierras are the best fur friendly bullet i have found.....they are made for punching paper so they do not expand as much but, enough to kill coyotes. good luck......AJ
