24" 338 edge broke 2850fps today 30"?

I have as close to a factory edge as possible. That is a savage 116 bgh 338win rechambered to the 338 edge. Plan started with the purchase of said rifle as a donor action but has evolved into it's own animal and is shooting the 300gr berger at 2850 with 92gr of H1000, shot the first full powered groups today results: .3 at 100yrds........Savage barrel rechambered, Schuler's brake installed, savage synthetic stock with factory bolts replaced and torqued to 45lbs. DNZ 1" game reeper mount I had laying around and a bushnell 3200 10x40 mildot dirt cheep scope. Even still has factory marshmallow recoil pad. Weighing in 11.2 lbs sporting that recoil pad and that brake it kicks less than my WSM. Bulk remington brass was necked up with 338 win die because I have not got rum dies yet (factory sized and dented) trimmed uniform, primer pockets uniformed and case mouth chamfered/deburred otherwise unsorted. When I hit 2845 fps I thought.....why do I want a thirty inch barrel? When I realized I could watch my hits threw my 10x scope as close as 100yrds even standing hunched over the bench shooting from the tall bipod, I thought............why do I want a 15lb rifle? When the first four rounds showed 5/16 center to center I thought........why do I need a custom barrel and a different stock? Now I am going to leave this one alone hands down, no contest and I will not even bed it if it keeps shooting like this but I may build another now and I am wondering from those more experienced can I expect that speed typically from such a short barrel? Are there other factors I am missing? Barrel length for velocity, weight for stability and recoil. If accuracy is sub .5", velocity is respectable and stability and recoil are not issues are there any advantages to longer and heavier? I would appreciate any opinions or influences I may be overlooking. Thanks

no first hand experience but am working on my edge right now and am going for a light version. Dunno why it seems so common for 11-16 pound 338 rifles, hopin mine will come in at around 10 with the scope on. I wanna be able to carry mine and hunt, if im shootn at the bench ill grab the .243

Well Thanks for the reply I was beginning to question if I was ticking somebody off or something with 62 views and no responses.......... There has to be a reason everyone builds them so long and heavy but unless my velocity is a freak and way off the normal I can't figure what it would be.

Congrats, you have a fine shooter with great velocity. My 338 Lapua only gets 2805 MV with a 300 SMK, 27 1/2 " barrel and 92.5 gr of H1000 @ 4000 ft.

Is your velocity matched up with drops and the BC of the bullet? What chronograph? Velocity is just a number to me though. Sounds like you have a shooter. Take her to 1000 yards and show us what she does there.

Thanks for posting your info.

Jeff

Yep. Do that. And if it shoots right, then you are more than right not messing with it.

Have not taken this one long yet but will be directly of course. Proof is in the pudding no doubt and I will have to prove it to myself even. The chrony is just a cheap F1 16' from the muzzle but has a solid record with very extensive work ups with the WSM that I have bean using and they matched up solid and I reconfirmed the wsm speeds in the same session. I just never expected so much from this "stepping stone" rifle...... We'll see if it all adds up when we stretch her out.

24" barrel, 300gr berger at 2850 with 92gr of H1000.

I would say not possible. Be more likely to get 2700 fps with that length barrel. But if true then thank your lucky stars and go hunting.
