22" barrel 180g bullet well whats max range you are going to be shooing at?

With a 30-06 and a barrel that short I would lean more in the direction of a 165g Game king than any other bullet.

Re: 180gr 30-06 Bullet

I loaded for a couple guys here last year with 30-06's. Both modle 70's with many rounds down em. I used Rem brass, a WLR primer and RL19 under a 168 gr Barnes TSX. First I scrubbed the bores with Boretech Eliminator. When finished they both shot 3/4" at 100 yds. These were 300 yard max rifles. They both got their Elk.

Some of the area that we are hunting you will only be able to see a
few yards and other times several hundred yards...

You aint kiddin'! And some places they dont make a repelling rope long enough to get to your elk when he dies. I fought fire in the 7-Devils, and Heavens Gate.
Hmm 22'' pipe sounds alot like my Model-70 Win XTR 30-06. For elk I always ran 180 gr Silvertips, factory stuff thru mine, but that was before I handloaded. I brought down a few elk and alot of deer, and a couple bears with it.
While I like the 180gr in an -06, I think you may be better served with a 168gr Accubond. It would realy help out on those cross canyon shots that seem to present themselves in steep country. but thats just my opinion. An -06 is a capable cartrige, so whatever you choose Im sure youll do well.

Re: 180gr 30-06 Bullet

I like the Game king and the Barnes idea mentioned above too. I here that the new TTSX's open at lower velocity, that may be something to consider if your gonna streach its legs. No matter what I like a tough bullet for elk for my style of hunting. 0-600yds. So I realy have a ''thing'' for the Accubond. It fits my style like a glove. Someday when I better my personal ability and equipment Ill look into bergers for way out there stuff.

Thank you for your post, looking at a 180gr Accubond or Swift bullet.
