162g A-MAX

I went to Sportsmans Warehouse today to get a few things and the 162g AMAX was on the list for the STW. Come to find out, they say they require a 1 in 8 twist. I did not know that. There advertised b.c. is .625 though. So just to be safe, I bought the SST version with a b.c. of .550
Could you shoot the AMAX out of the STW? I'm not exactly sure what twist mine is, its gotta be a 1 in 9 or 10. Winchester model 70. Well, I will be doing 2 more ladder tests. 1 with the STW and the 162g SST, and another with my 300 RUM and the 220g SMK. I will be using H-1000 and IMR-7828. Will post results.

i know people that shoot 162 a-max, 168-180 bergers and get great results with a 9 twist in 7UM.

Unless the barrel is way different, it will stabilize the Amax just fine. I use them in my 7RM and they shoot wonderfully at velocities over 3150fps.

You might want to consider slower powders then the H1000/IMR 7828. Also try Re25, Retumbo and even H50BMG/H870. The STW is quite overbore and the 162gr Amax has a long bearing surface. A slow powder might just work better for your rifle.

I just had a 7RM built at LSR (Chris) which has a 1 in 9 twist. The 2 bullets I'm working with right now are the 162gr A-Max and the 175gr SMK using RL-22. So far, the A-Max has nothing on the MKs for accuracy in my gun. The A-Max has shot nothing better than 1/2" in my gun, and that is rare. The MKs stay in the 3's with the majority of loads, with the better ones going under 1/4". I'm not done testing loads yet, but I think I've already made up my mind.
Another interesting thing I have found is that at max load using RL-22, I'm only about 60 fps slower when using the 175s. I guess I expected a larger spread.

The 162s stabilize for me in a 1:9.25 twist (7mmWby)but you have to look out at 300yds. In close they are kind of wandering around. The Sierra 168 & 175MK and the Nosler 160 AB are good choices to try.

Good point Buffalo. I guess I shouldn't give up on them yet. I may have to wait a while though. It's been so hot lately and the mirage so bad, I've had a hard time shooting for groups beyond 100. Also, the barrel is taking so long to cool in this weather [img]/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif[/img].

The 162gr A-Max will stabilize in my 10" twist 7STW and shoots into 1" @ 200yds. The 160 Accubond shoots slightly better and has lower SD, for whatever reason.

The Accubond MAY be more of a bullet than you need on thin skinned biggame, however, the A-Max MAY be less than you need depending on impact velocity, point of impact and so on.

I prefer the Accubond based on my testing.
