105grn A-Max Velocity potential
Hello all, as many of you know, I am having a 6x284 built for long range varminting. I would like to use the 105grn A-max and would like to be able to push the bullet at around 3400fps. However, I am getting conflicting info regarding how fast this bullet can be pushed. Some have said they push the 105grn A-Max to over 3400fps out of a 6x284, with no blow ups, and others say if you push the bullet over 3200fps, it will blow up. I would like to hear what you guys have to say.
I will be using a Krieger 30", 1-8.5 twist barrel.

Alot has to do with the barrel , you will likely not be able to get the velocity out of you Kreiger and keep the bullet together as you would with a Shilen. The Shilen has 8 lands and grooves and is a buttonrifle barrel which mean the lands are a little shallow compaired to a cut rifled barrel like the Kreiger and the Kreiger only has 4 lands a grooves.
Generaly speeking the fewer the lands and grooves the bigger they are and harder they will be on thin jacketed bullet , this is why alot of guys cant get the velocity they expect out of a 3 groove Lilja or Pac-Nor.
I have seen a 6mm-06Ai run a 105 A-max out to over 3800 fps in a 30" Hart barrel with awsome accuracy to 1000yds.
If I were gonna try to get top velocity out of a barrel I would go with either a Rockcreek , Obermeyer or Broughton with their 5R land and groove desgine , these barrels generaly get higher speeds with any bullet weight and the 5R land desgine isin't quiet as rough on the bullet jacket

I have a 1:8.2 twist 5r Rockcreek and it smokes them at 3250. It started with a key hole on shot number 4 then after about 20 rounds they all blew up. My hired man had never seen this so he could not figure out what was going on in the spotting scope. This really sucked because the few I had make it out there were very accurate. This bullet was supposed to be used on deer but I started using 115 gr DTAC in the hopes it may work a little better than the 107 SMK. Kirby has a theory on using a Lilja and I think a 9 twist to get these to work but I would have to think you're never very far from blowing them up. A little crud in the barrel and poof.

The 115 dtacs hold together very well under high velocity even through a pacnor. I had problems with the 115 Bergers and hear others are having problems out of the 117 dtacs.

I could only get 3250 out of my 6-284 with the 105 amaxes before they would blow up. I have pushed the 107 Smk to 3500 and the 117 Dtacs to 3300 with out failure. I am using a 1-8 twist kreiger

Wildcat,
If you are even thinking about 3400fps the 105A-Max is the last bullet to consider (worst B.C. in its class, butter-copper alloy jacket), if no -blow-up the berger 105VLD is the best choice , if not 107smk sierra will hold up to even a 3groove for a few hundred rounds.UB

The amax will give you the best chance for postive expansion on light targets at low velocity, of course the reason your getting this is due in part to the reason why the bullets blow up at high speed and the rest is that wonderful polymer tip. kinda a catch 22 i guess
