Zeiss Conquest RapidZ 1000

Am considering the 4.5-14 by 44mm Zeiss Conquest with the Rapid Z 1000 reticle, for my .308 Savage 10 FCP-K Accutrigger. Shooting military surplus, German 147gr NATO, and I understand the reticle is calibrated for Federal Match BT, and will just hope to adjust when I do sight in. I am old, and getting older and dumber by the second, so I like that I will not have to play with turrets, and knobs etc. Question is: To get out to the 1000 yard range/hash mark, will I need an angled [10MOA, 15MOA, 20MOA?] mount? It seems logical that because the reticle is set up for 200-1000, a flat mount would be required. Thank you for your time, and once again, thanks for all the help on the forum.

Re: Zeiss Conquest RapidZ 1000

Tapered bases give additional elevation for the shooters who "dial up" their elevation. For the set-up that you are referring to, you "hold-over" for elevation. There is no need for a tapered base when you hold over. The reticle is used as a reference to determine approximately how much you need to hold-over. The Rapid Z 1000 would not work as designed if a tapered base was used.

Re: Zeiss Conquest RapidZ 1000

Your Zeiss Rapid-Z 1000 will work with both the flat-based and the tapered-based mounts. Your reticle will end up closer to the bottom with the tapered base than the flat base. Either way it'll work but why spend more money when you don't need to.

Your right about the Rapid Z 1000 matching the trajectory of the .308 round. I don't know if it was coincidental or by design though. I went to Zeiss/sports.com, clicked on the Rapid-Z Calculator icon and entered a popular .308 balistics.

Blackhills, 168 Matchkings, bc .480, @ 2650fps
Here's your drops:

Line 1 - 0
Line 2 - 193
Line 3 - 298
Line 4 - 396
Line 5 - 500
Line 6 - 604
Line 7 - 710
Line 8 - 818
Line 9 - 927
Line 10 - 0 (?)

Pretty close I'd say.

I own a couple Zeiss Rapid-Z 800s. Here's the drops on my .257Laserby (Weatherby)

Line 6 - 707yds
Line 7 - 829yds
Line 8 - 949yds

LRSickle - Good point that the RZ 1000 could work with a tapered base but just isn't needed. I was thinking that it would adversely affect the holdover marks but your post led me to rethink that.
