Mine does have a 200 yd. zero and it does have a 20 MOA Picatinny rail.

Here is the target which is the second time I shot in competition at 1,000 yds. The scores & group sizes are in the lower right of the target. All 15 shots would have hit the boiler room of an antelope.

The winning groups were down in the 6" sizes. My smallest was 8+1/8th." I think I had high score on the 46 pts. out of a possible 50 pts.

PS: Here is what I said: "With my scope (Vortex PST FFP 6-24x50mm) with 1/4" clicks it takes me 108 clicks to get from 200 yds. to 1,000 yds. With 1/8" clicks I would have to count 216 clicks to get to 1,000 yds.

Re: Vortex 4-16x50 out to 1000 with a 308?

The Vortex Viper HS 4-16x50 LR might be able to get there. It has 75 MOA of total elevation travel. It just depends on how many MOA of travel are used up to get to your zero.

I have one of these never used in the box if you are looking for one. Just IM me. I bought 7 to set up some long range guns and had two left over..

Not trying to start an arguement. Just my thoughts.

I think the PST Viper model might make it out to and past 1000 but I question the ability to get the 4-16x50 HS model to 1000 without a rail and with a rail it is going to be very very close.

I have two 4x16x50 HS and my 338 win mag would not reach (short close to 200 yards) and the adjustment was maxed out.

Review the specs and ability of the scope. The HS model is a nice 50yd - 750 yd scope. If you want a real long distance scope, you are probably going to have to up the ante with a better scope.

Just my opinion and experience.

Re: Vortex 4-16x50 out to 1000 with a 308?

The Vortex Viper HS has 75MOA of travel, which is quite a bit. My 270 gets to 1000 yards with 8.5MOA travel left over on the turret and a standard base. The .308 you may need a 20 or 30MOA base to get there, but that would be the case with alot of scopes on a 308. I tried sighting in a 308 with the Vortex Viper HS 4-16x50 and ended up being maxed out at 700 yards being 8inches low. I did the beer can shim trick to cant my base and got 30 more MOA out of it. The 308 is tough, because it has so much drop.

My 260 AI is zeroed at 100 and I shoot out to 1000 with it. I use a 20 MOA base and a Vortex Razor HD 5-20X50 EBR 2B MRAD. It takes roughly 7.5 mils to get to 1000 from my 100 yard zero (depends on environmental conditions and location). At my zero stop, I still have just over 25 mils of up travel which is enough to go farther than I will ever shoot, but this scope has 36 MRADs (125MOA) of internal adjustment.

I think if you want to make it to 1000 on a 308 with the 4-16 PST, you would be best suited with at least a 20 MOA base.

Re: Vortex 4-16x50 out to 1000 with a 308?

This is last Friday out on the sheep farm where I hunt

Standing with my back to the 300 yard steel target looking back to the shooting position. Its on the crest of the hill to the right of the barn.

I'm doing load development on 185 Bergers and 175 SMK's. The slightly bigger craters are them. The smaller ones are 95gr VLD's from my 243 AI. That is just over a 2" group at 300 yards and I had an awful shooting position due to the high grass and using a sitting bipod with the rear of the stock on my rolled up shooting mat. No way I could get a decent cheek weld with that setup. And I am now getting rid of my Rifle Basix trigger and going back to an accutrigger.

Bottom line, it took hardly 15 minutes to get sighted in at 160 yards and then dial up and shoot a 2" group at 300. I have to clear some brush before I will be able to get in a 450 yards shot and wind will become a bigger factor. I regard the 4-16 or 6-24 as great general purpose scopes. I personally would not want to be in the field with a fixed optic (except a low power one) if I could help it.
