Uncomfortable sighting through scope.

I finally put a 20 MOA Picatinney rail on my rifle. I have always had my rifles sighted in at POI at 100 yards. I have only shot out to about 300 yards and only used hold over.

Now that I am planning to shoot way past 300 yards it seems difficult to hold over when sighted in at 200 yards and the bullet will drop like a rock past 600 yards. I haven't shot that far yet, but it seems a lot different holding over when the bullet is rising first and then falls after it reaches its height. When sighted at 100 yards it is fairly flat then drops which seems natural to me.

Am I making any sense? It is hard to explain. I know that I can be confident with the drop chart after I "dope" it out.

Maybe someone can help me out?

If you sight in at 200 yards, then generally speaking your bullet will "rise" no more than 3 inches on its way to 200 yards. That's not enough to consider unless you're trying to whack the head of a squirrel at 150 yards.

To shoot to 600, are you going to use a turret to dial in elevation beyond 200 yards? Are you going to use an MOA reticle to determine your hold over, or possibly use a BDC-style reticle? Or are you just guessing?

The first 3 options are all fine options. Just guessing how much to hold over won't work well at all.

I have a Vortex Viper 6-24x50mm PST FFP MOA Turrets & retical on pre-order from SWFA. I plan on having Kenton Industries make me a new elevation turret in yards to match my laser range finder. I am planning to use the horizontal MOA marks to hold for wind.

The rifle I will be using is a 6mm Norma BR shooting Berger 105 gr. VLDs at about 2,950 fps out of a 26" 1 in 8" twist Brux barrel. I have shot a couple of 5 shot groups (no wind) which have measured in the .3s at 200 yds.

I plan on using it for antelope this fall. This past year I killed an 8 pt. whitetail at 200 yds. with it. The 105 VLD went through its neck and out its far side leg bone. While sighting in at 307 yds. one of the bullets went clean through a 3" diameter oak branch. I do not know how far of a shot would be ethical, but maybe 400 yards would be its limit.

Maybe now ya'll could give my some advice with this info?

I sight all my rigs in at 300 yards, easier for the closer shots (for me anyways) and don't have to dial as much on the longer ones.

That sounds like it's going to be a great set up when it comes together!
Your bullet is only going to rise just over an inch and at my elevation that combo on antalope would be good out to around the 850 yrd mark based on 1800 fps min. velocity. I have a buddy that shoots the 105 Berger out of a 243 and it is and awesome combo, 400yrd antalope or deer is not giving it much of a work out, it's a very good combo your putting together!
