How did you arrive at doing the extended tenon? Just more support for a long barrel?

It was the smith I have building it. He suggested it since we are hanging a heavy barrel off it and it will be floated. If you think about it, all that weight is hanging off the threaded portion of the barrel. This will give it a bit more length and add very litle weight. Made sence to me.
