Talley Lightweight Mounts or 20 moa Rail??

I purchased a Remington 700 5r 300 Win Mag and plan on putting a Vortex Viper 6-24x50 on it. I have had great luck with the Talley mounts on my other rifles but thought about going with a rail. Any thoughts or recommendations? Also with a 20 moa rail, what size/height rings would you recommend?

with a rail you might get by with med rings if she is 30mm tube, the talley rings are great but for a heavy kicking rifle and heavy scope I like their stainless QD lever detach bases and rings, better than any rail and freakin solid

Most if not all picatinny rails will place your scope up height enough to use the lowest tactical rings you can find! This is especially true with the bigger the tube, 1", 30 mm, 34 mm, 35 mm, as the tube size goes up so does the height.

I had a tough time finding tactical rings low enough. I own a pair of 30 mm Leupold Mark 4 low rings that still could be way lower, and a pair of 34 mm Talley Medium rings (that is as low as they manufacture in 34 mm) but are way too height. I did have an issue with the Talley 20 MOA base though..... wasn't 20 MOA, more like 7 MOA after I replaced it with one made by cameron at Murphy Precision. He's made two for me so far and a very sharp spot on guy. Highly recommend, but so are the light weight rings and bases by Talley. I own a half dozen of those, great for keeping the scope as low as possible. Is really a matter of whether or not your using a tactical scope or not? If not go with the Talley Light Weight Rings in their bases.

    Hope that helps?

It just depends on how far you are going to shoot your rifle.

On my twin Remington 700 Senderos chambered in 7mm STW the set-up I use on each of them is a 20 MOA EGW for the Picatinny rail and low Burris 30mm Tactical Rings with the Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 FFP EBR-1 MOA Reticle scopes. They seem to hold pretty well with the recoil and with the 20 MOA rail I can dial it out to over 1,500 yards if I want.

My Remington 700 LSS .257 Weatherby Magnum has Talley Lightweight 30mm Rings -Medium for my Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 FFP EBR-1 MOA Reticle Scope. I can dial out to 900 yards with that set-up and that's about as far as the .257 Weatherby Magnum is capable of.

Below are a few pictures of my twin Remington 700 Sendero 7mm STW rifles & my Remington 700 LSS .257 Weatherby Magnum with the set-ups I mentioned above.

Re: Talley Lightweight Mounts or 20 moa Rail??

I am looking at Shawn Carlock's solid ring base combo similar to Talley Lightweights. His have 20 MOA built into them and are 2-3oz for the set.
I have emailed him about what heights they come in and if they are available with 8-40 screws. Waiting for a reply.

Nightforce also has a Direct Mount ring/base combo that weighs in at 4.9oz for a long action. They told me they don't offer a 8-40 option, only 6-48 though.

I am looking to save weight on my carry rifle and this is what I have found out so far.

I just got a reply back from Shawn abot his one piece base/ring combo.
They are not offered in 8-40 option.

I talked to DNZ and they with will modify their direct mount base/ring combo to 8-40.
