Stupid mount question

Ok I have been trying for hours to figure out the difference between a flat/15 moa/20 moa base etc. For my Mueller scope I ordered with 60 MOA internal adjustment it is said that on my 308 to reach 1,000 yds I would need a 20 moa base. And that is a darn shame as I didnt want to have to spend more money now. But I dont want to have redo all my sighting/dope in a month when I upgrade. So I might as well do it now before I even start.

In short I finally found my answer as to the different bases.

Re: Stupid mount question

Go with the 20 MOA base. Much better to have it an not need it, than to need it and not have it. The cost difference can be negligible depending on the components you choose.

I put 20 MOA bases on everything except 22 LR.

Re: Stupid mount question

You can use a flat base and Burris signature rings with the 20 MOA inserts as an alternative.

Re: Stupid mount question

If my scope ever gets here? Was suppsoed to be here today at the latest, I am gonna have the shop up the street mount it with the signature rings. I get it, as long as you can align it reasonably then you can change the inserts to give you that forward tilt, hopefully they will understand how to do this better then me. Thanks for the replys.

Re: Stupid mount question

Make sure they degrease the rings and in particular the screws and holes. I found out the hard way on an antelope hunt what happens when you don't. You miss a lot until you figure it out.

Re: Stupid mount question

On second thought I think I will do it my self at the range just for a learning experience. In theory (I know) on my 308 (150 gr ammo) I will be able to shoot out to 300 this week just to get info for sundays coyote adventure. Is their a way JFMI on that 100 yd target to see if I could get out to 1,000 yds? Just so I dont have to redo everything in a couple weeks. The "remington shoot program" says to set sights 412" high for 1,000 yd with 100yd zero. That seems pretty high to me? I know actually doing it is the only real test, but I wont be able to shoot that far for at least a couple weeks probably. Just so I can set it up for max range the first time since the scope I ordered only has 60 moa adjustment. Thanks

Re: Stupid mount question

412 inches drop at 1000 yards is 39.3 MOA. So once you are zeroed at 100 yards, spin the dial while counting and see if you have 39+ MOA of "UP" elevation left.
