strandard paralex on scope

What yardage is it set for on a non adjustable scope? Say like a Nikon 3x9x50mm bdc scope or similar. At what yardage do you think a scope like that is non efective for ethical shots on game due to paralax ?

Re: strandard paralex on scope

Scopes without AO are set for 100 or 200 yards. Read your manual; or set it up on solid rests front and rear at the range. Set Target at either distance; look thru scope at a target without moving the scope. Then move your eye around slightly. The reticule should not move on the target. If it does, try another target distance until it does not move. That is where you will be parallex free.

Assuming you need an 8" diameter properly centered kill zone, a scope with a 50mm objective can have a 4" offset if your eye is positioned incorrectly at as little as 500 yards if the fixed scope is focused for 100 yards. That allows for no other errors. if the scope has a fixed focus of 200 yards, that distance would move to 1000 yards but again uses all of the error margin.

Since parallax error is easily avoidable by properly using an adjustable objective there's little excuse not to use one for long range hunting.
