For a given magnification a wide field eyepiece really does provide a wider field of vew, both apparent and actual. That comes at the expense of either a more complex and shorter eye relief or a more complex and physically larger eyepiece. Some expensive and high quality spotting scopes do give supurb "picture window" views. Cheaper wide angle scopes will usually have more distortion or poorer color correction at the edges of the field than "standard" eyepieces.
"Better" depends on whether your'e more interested in searching a lot of terrain rapidly or resolving fine detail. For money and added weight you can have both.
