A really dumb question regarding reticles

Had a thought the other evening and my research has be futile.

Question: Where is the reticle with respect to the target?

That it, is it at the target distance, between the target distance and the rifle?

Or which area of my trifocals should I be using w/the scope?:o;)

It's inside your scope. Look, it's in there.

The crosshairs are in the same plane as the target. I normally wear bifocals but for hunting I wear single lens glasses.
