rangefinders? what one and why

I have played with a few of them, and owned a few too.
I was wondering what ones' you feel are the most accurate out to 1,000 yards, ranging Animals, for hunting, not just targets!

Re: rangefinders? what one and why

The Leica 1200 LRF Scan.

Why, cause that's what I have...........

Its limitations are the same as any other LRF regarding ranging under different lighting conditions.

Its single most important/impressive feature that the "beam" seems to be the same size as the aiming square.

I've tested and tested again with the same results. Again depending on lighting conditions I can mark a range then range one aiming square on each side & above and below and range the slope of the hill or get back into the woods as much as 140 yards between trees at the edges of the aiming square. This is at ranges beyond 800 yds.

Additionally at this particular point in time it will out range my personal shooting capabilities. However this may change this spring....

bushnell elite 1500

simply because they work (and work well from my experience) and are cheap. I can range deer sized game to around 750-850 yards and on trees i have no problem picking up at 1650 yards.

Swarovski,

Nothing for less than $1000 will range as far as the Swaro. When I want to range a distance - I expect to get a reading. I had both the Bushnell 1500 Arc and the Leica 1200 fail to range distances as close as 700 yds. The Swaro will virtually always give me the range out to 1100, and commonly out to 1500-1700yds.

For the amount that I use one my Monarch 800 factory refurbished is fine. Other than for kicks I don't need to know about the ranges past 400 yards usually. The only use for that may be to laser back to the truck in dogtown to check the distance.

What you'll learn one of these days that the beam is wide enough that you won't know exactly what you are ranging at one of those 1400 yard distances.

You'll range on an animal and ping a tree 50 yds closer. Result will be a miss.

One of these days...........

I bit the bullet and bought a Swaro range finder today. Please tell me I got the best one I could get not just the most expensive.
