Re: Opinions on Nightforce

I own the NP-R2 (5.5-22X50) and the MOAR (3.5-15X56). I prefer the MOAR for my shooting needs. If your focus was only on shooting tiny groups, the finer reticle on the NP-R2 would likely be more advantageous.

Re: Opinions on Nightforce

Thanks for all the feedback. My thinking is correct in the MOAR being very useful for hunting, it has an advantage over a Horus reticle until dialing becomes more practical at longer ranges. I think I'm going to go with 3x15x50 maybe 56 unless someone can tell me 7-800 yard accuracy can't be had at 15x. I'm a little skeptical in that my Leupold vx-3 4.5x14 just didn't seem like enough power even at 400 yards. More opinions, especially if you have a vx-3 like I mentioned and have the same experience. Is the glass the difference or the magnification with a Nightforce?

I think that 7-800 yard accuracy can be had with a 15x, but I believe power preference varies amongst shooters. If your 14x Leupold didn't seem like enough power to you, the 15x NF probaly won't either. Ihave a VX3 Leupold in 4.5x14 and i thought the glass was pretty good and shot quite a number of deer and coyotes out to 500 yards using the B/C Reticle. In daylight conditions I don't think you will see enough difference at 400 yards between the clarity of the two scopes to make up for magnification. If you didn't feel like 14x was enough power at 400 yards, 800 will be a problem with any scope. You should consider the 5.5-22 NSX. Unless you really need the low end of the 3-15x, there isn't much downside to having the higher power, particularly if you decide to extend your range further in the future. IMHO.

I am thinking the same thing if you say that about the Leupold. Maybe that is my eyes too. So magnification will help. I do see the 5.5x22x50 and 56 seem to always be in demand here. That's probably why.
