I had a thought, since the laser is reflected back to the rangefinder, couldn't the laser reflect back to your own eyes and cause damage?

No, it won't reflect back to you in the respect you mentioned. It's reflected back to the unit itself, not to the operators eyes through the view finder.

Only on the outgoing segment is it not safe and then it has to be a full direct beam to someones eyes.

I wouldn't zap anyone directly in the eyes even with a so called eye safe unit, would you?
Even the civilian Bushnell laser tells you not to point it at a person at close range.

I didn't know the reflections was eyesafe. It seems like the reflection would always enter the view finder because the beam disperment is at likely more than a yard wide.
