Which Nightforce reticle?

Am planning to purchase a Nightforce 5.5x22-56, and can't decide which reticle. Most shooting (right now) with .223, at 300 yards or less, (groundhogs and coyotes) but want to buy enough scope for future "expansion" to longer ranges. Any suggestions? I like pictures of the -2DD, but wonder if I'd get tired of the dot. The -R1 or -R2 might be more practical??
And second, how much to get the reticle changed if I don't like what I get?

This is my first post, so be gentle.

Thanks, Tommy in NC

    Welcome aboard Tommy,

I owned few scopes far now, with MILDOT, or MP-8 , NP-R1, and I like more the NP-R1 with 1 MOA for Elevation, and 2 MOA for Windage.
If you need the scope for varmint LRH go with NP-R1 or NP-R2.
And get the Zero-Stop option too.
I have the 8.5-32-56 NF NP-R1,and I love it. I shoot at deers with 15 power but I cranck up at maximum power for more detail view, adn take the shot at 15 power (up to 1033 yrs) After 1k I need to go on 22 power.

About the reticle change, sorry I don't know. But if you ask Scott @ LibertyOptics, he will be the right person to give you adviced.

    Tommy,

I prefer the NP-R1 as an all around reticle due to what this reticle can do. You have multiple hold points and a range finding feature that is both quick and very simple to utilize.

If you purchase a Nightforce scope and you don't like the reticle or you would like to try something different, we can change the reticle for you for 150.00. This price unfortunately will go up to 200.00 after Jan.

There are also several Nightforce vendors here, like Mike from CS gunworks. Great guy and great service.

hope this information helps and by the way, welcome to the site. You will find a vast amount of knowledge here and some great input.

    Regards,
    Ken

With the NF NXS you'll already have second focal plane, side focus, plenty of power, and an accurate external elevation turret.
Add to it, Zero Stop, a medium-fine crosshair(CH1), and a good laser rangefinder.

We sale a lot of NPR1 but I prefer the MLR with MIL RAD turrets. The MIL System just works better for me when ranging and in holdovers.

    Thanks Ken for the recommendation.
