Irons a joke for punching paper past 100 yds?

I've been shooting airguns for quite some time now as a chance to get outdoors to punch paper and also for squirrel in the fall and a good 5 shot group is in a dime or nickel at 20 yards. Seems that with powder burners the same group is considered good at 100 yards.

Is it possible to get MOA sized groups with irons at 100 yards and out?

By the way, my groups with the air rifle don't count in this thread (cheating;)... 3-9 scope).

Since I am one of the oldest shooters here, 76, I can speak from personal experience at the 1,000 yard line with Redfield 1/8the click irons. My prone sores were in the 187-8X range; it can be done with good sling and cheek weld --used an Win -70 308 190 gr handloads. Shooting irons today would not be feasible with glasses.

I saw shooters do it with 200 gr Sierra's at Perry in 300 H&H rifles. I could barely see the dammed target and yet they could see the bullseye

With circular metallic peep sights and a round bulleseye (as with 1000 yard Palma and other highpower targets, it's been demonstrated that a person with normal eyesight can align metallic sights to better than 1/2 moa. That does not require actually resolving to dot to better than 1 moa, only judging the brightness distribution of the ring of light between the sight aperture and the bullesye. In thousand yard matches at standard targets (not shot from bench or or bags) having a scope is less important than the shooters skill at doping wind and the shooters physical shooting skill. For doping wind metallic sight shooters are still allowed spotting scopes.

Since animals aren't round black dots metallic sights are a disadvantage for LongRangeHunting(tm) both in aiming and target recognition. The vital zone of animals is not necessarily at the animal's center of mass and it's not good to shoot a farmers calf or goat thinking thinking it a deer or antelope.

I love irons for close range hunting but even with glasses that "fix" my vision: I can get 1moa out to 100 and 2-2.5 moa out to 700 with irons on a good rifle, beyond that Forget about it don't even waist the ammo. Everyday, I thank God all mighty for life, liberty and high powered optics.
