What rifle is this on?
2200 fps is smoking for that caliber. Or at least for me, I am lucky if I see 1600 out of my 16" contender.

This thread is sorta going sideways
52 gr. imr 4198.350 gr. hornady rn 2167 fps out of a 20 inch ruger #1 chronoed last week. This load is right out of hodgdons website,H4198 is supposed do even better. These are not levergun or trapdoor loads.Should be able to get 2500 fps with a 300 gr with h4198.I LOVE my 45-70,s.Mounting a ballistic plex on a 45-70 is just way cool, should generate alot of grins and maniacal laughter.Take care GRPB.

Yea we are off topic here....
Yea I knew that the contender and the old 94 wins were kind of the middle ground as far as action strength. But I had no idea guys where getting that kind of velocity's out of the Rugers. That would change the rules somewhat for that cartridge.
I don't know if I could hit anything with that contender pistol of mine or not. but it sure makes you smile when you pull the trigger. And as far as off topic, here is what I figured with my burris 1.55 mils 4.5 mils 7.525 mils 11.06 mils Will |

Tyler when u convert i always remember that the MOA # is smaller than the inch per hundred yard (IPHY) #. The way i remember it is that MOA has less letters than IPHY, so the # will also be smaller--might help some.

H4198 is THE powder for the 45-70. You could probably get 2600 fps from a 300 grainer in a Ruger with a longish barrel.
Or 2550 from the 325 LE bullet. |
