Go to the article sect. above and read Modern Reticules, that will help get yuo up to speed. I use both systems, in same scope, depends on shooting situation for choice for me.

Re: BDC turret vs. BDC reticle

Question: I have an older Swarovski 3-12 x 56 on a 700 Rem .308 tactical rifle. Where can I send it to get good ballistic turrets put on it? I hate to buy another scope when I have some good ones on the shelf. I am assuming this can be done. thanks for any input.

Kenton Industries makes knobs for scopes . I'm not sure if they make them for swarovski .

Re: BDC turret vs. BDC reticle

First I am no expert but I'll throw out my opinion based on my experience. Your milage may vary but for me it is a matter of targeted purpose and budget. If kill zone of big game at ranges of 5-700 max with an efficient caliber are you goal then even some very inexpensive optics like nikon's prostaff do that very well with speed and total reliability but add more distance and things get loose and you run out of specific aiming points. Either method suggests an anti cant devise (level). Turret scopes require more scrutiny in there adjustments and therefor a higher expense is incurred to acquire reliable and REPEATABLE adjustments, more time setting up for the shot and a check of adjustment position even for those sudden close range opportunities. With the bdc scopes you still need real data and still need a drop chart but they are allot faster. For thousand yard bullseye competition you need more magnification and finer adjustments than most bdc scopes offer. I use several different nikon bdc scopes on our general purpose hunting rifles 725yard max expectation. For the designated long range rigs turrets just made more cents but they are requiring more investment in there glass. OK that was my 2 cents which is only worth .0001 if your trying to get a refund. Good luck

VERY WELL SAID SIR! worth way more than that. I also use turrets and BDC reticles for loong-range hunting and prefere reticles way more than turrets to intermediate range--~600-650 or so. The it's onto turrets beyond that for most of my uses--coyotes mostly. The better part of the majority of our shooting requires an accurate thoroughly tested reticle system for LR shooting. Here's the system i just came up with for the Nikon Encore 2.5-8x BDC reticle on this 22-250--
