I think you really need to look at the IOR tactical 4.5~14x50 with the MP-8 dot reticle and the new 25 moa top turret.
But for that matter a 3.5~15 or a 5.5~22x50 Nightforce NXS is har to beat. All will fall easily into your price range.

as a beginner one thing I am realizing if you want to get past 300 yards your gonna need top of the line optics it certainly isn't all about caliber. Lots to learn for us beginners. Thanks for the info

The best shooting rifle and markman in the world , ain't got a change with a poor scope or mounting system.

I would go nightforce 5.5-22, maybe a trijicon 5-20, or a zeiss conquest 6-24. this thread looks familiar

Re: 300 to 800 yard scopes/ experiences suggestions
I just picked up a Leupold Mark 4 8.5-25X50 LRT and in my opinion it is more optic than you'll ever need. I plan on shooting out to a mile with it. I think it is also the best of the affordable optics.

Re: 300 to 800 yard scopes/ experiences suggestions
My comfort zone is a 22X for 300-1000 yards. However, I have also had great success with a fixed 10x. I am looking at getting a 16X for my lightweight set up for 1K sheep, moose and elk.
